Most people would fall into one of two categories: an early bird or a night owl, and rarely has there ever been someone who has been both. At least I have never met someone who can rise early and stay up late into the dead of night. So, what is appealing about being up at the crack of dawn or being awake until 2 in the morning? Let’s start with those early risers, the ones who are up to see that sun rise, the quiet before the storm of activity starts anew.

Waking up early certainly has its perks, the quiet peacefulness, the slow yet steady increase of noise as the world wakes up and seeing everything slowly come alive. Hearing the birds wake up, the world still peaceful yet the dark transitioning to a stunning sunrise. One can learn to appreciate life seeing all this and just knowing you are awake once again to experience such a beautiful sight. A cup of warm coffee in your hand to top it off, and the day before you feels invincible, with so many possibilities in front of you and anything being possible. Suddenly there is more motivation to make plans, to build a schedule, maybe fit a workout before work, or just more time to sit with your cup of coffee and reflect. You suddenly have so much time to do what you want to do, go on a spontaneous adventure, achieve your goals, the sky is the limit because the day has barely started. Sounds like those night owls sure are missing out, sleeping the morning away, right? Well, I wouldn’t totally dismiss the idea of being a night owl just yet. Just as there are perks of being a morning person, there is some appeal of being a night owl.

While mornings are for those who love a good structured peaceful way of starting the day, to reflect and enjoy that beautiful sunrise, night is for those who enjoy brainstorming in the dark, under the mystery of complete and utter silence. It is exciting to be awake, knowing the world around you is asleep and will continue to sleep for many hours more. There is an air of mystery when the world is completely dark, add a little rain, and suddenly you have the perfect setting to brainstorm creative new ideas or to have a sudden life revelation. As a writer myself, under the enchanting glow of my moon lamp, I suddenly come alive with so many new ideas, whether it is a new story idea or suddenly wanting to research new topics that pique my interest. At night, is when the adventurous spirit surges and everything around feels a little more mysterious and suddenly that crazy idea, the one that might change your life doesn’t seem so crazy at all. Suddenly, that childhood dream is a possibility, and all those lifelong dreams seem attainable under the comforting blanket of moonlight. There is a sense of freedom in knowing that you are awake when you should be asleep, and that sense of rebelliousness suddenly fuels all those bold ideas, and you feel more alive with that inspiration and that sense of adventure. Whether it’s staying up late to have that perfect vibe for shows, movies, books, or late-night projects, nighttime certainly sets a certain ethereal ambience that is hard to beat.
So, who has it figured out? I would say there is no concrete answer as they both have great appeals. And honestly, there is more in common night owls have with early birds than people might think. For introverts, these times represent a solitude that is needed to recharge, to focus on oneself and to realign yourself with what you need. In other words, early mornings and late nights offer peace to reflect and discover yourself more on a deeper, more spiritual level that introverts crave in the chaotic, busyness that is life.
